As a family photographer, I know that not all memories are captured with everyone dressed in their Sunday's best. Their hair so perfectly groomed it leaves the audience wondering if a professional hair stylist was hovering over, just waiting for the opportunity to leap in front of the camera to rescue the most epic shot from a renegade strand of hair. Nope! Sometimes we want something different than the highly prized family portrait thats perfectly displayed in the foyer or sitting room soaking in every ooh and awww from our guests. We sometimes want the REAL us. The RAW and INTIMATE us. Real moments that take place daily and easily gets forgotten in our busy lives.
This is especially common with families. We have a million things happening at once. Even on our days off from work. Things we don't even think about like brushing our hair, buttoning our toddler's overalls, tickling their toes before slipping on their socks, and eating breakfast before crossing off the first thing on our "to do" list for the day. Our homes aren't always blog or Instagram worthy every waking moment. Washing dishes by hand is NORMAL. Gasping at our toddler for picking up his dried cereal from the floor and popping it into his mouth is also very NORMAL. A lot of these mundane moments are common occurrences, but are usually forgotten quickly. Even forgotten before the end of the day!
So why are capturing these simple life moments so very important? Easy answer. It's LIFE, and even more importantly, it's YOUR LIFE. When we find a box of old photos from our childhood, our hearts usually swell. It swells with emotion. Full memories from when each photo was taken come back to us. These memories can bring back joy, laughter, and even sadness. Photos aren't just snapshots of moments. They are time capsules. Sometimes we catch ourselves holding a print, and just staring into space. But we aren't really in space, we are reliving that moment.
